About The Tour
A unique tour to discover the World War II tunnels at Stony Batter, plus lunch and wine tastings.
In this tour, you will participate in a privately guided tour of Fort Stony Batter led by archaeologist Tim Moon. Fort Stony Batter, a WWII Coastal Defence Fortress situated at the Eastern end of Waiheke Island, was strategically located to provide an unobstructed view of the Hauraki Gulf and the shipping approach to Auckland city.
Constructed in 1942 under utmost secrecy, the complex encompasses 1.2 kilometers of hand-tunneled subterranean passages, chambers, and stairwells. Designed to withstand direct enemy bombardment, the fortress stands remarkably preserved, representing an architectural and engineering marvel.
